Snack Foods: the Good, the Bad and the Healthy
By Lisa DeForest, DC

Snack foods in America seem to become more horrible with every passing year!

10 Worst Snack foods:

1. French Fries- starch cooked in hot fat oil, flavored with chemicals and sugar.
2. Donuts- fried bread, lets add sugar!
3. Potato and Corn Chips- packaged version of french fries. Damage control: Baked Blue Corn, not real food but better than the Circle K version.
4. Soda – regular or diet - not one ounce of nutrition, can you say chemicals?
5. Cupcakes and snack cakes, fake cream, sugar, white flour and flavoring.
6. Candy Bars- you might squeeze a gram or two of protein = nuts. The rest is a sugar orgy and nutrition nightmare.
7. Pork Rinds = Yuck!
8. Fat-Free Cookies - no fat, lots of sugar
9. Crackers - Tran fats, Hydrogenated oil anyone? Read the label!
10. Pretzels - white flour, water and sugar.

Runner Up:
Mocha-latte-frappe drinks that are taking over the universe - up to 1500 calories per drink… an entire day’s caloric intake!

10 Best Snack Foods:

1. Fruit - oranges, apples, grapes, bananas = high in anti-oxidants, fiber, natural sugar. These are energy producers!
2. Nuts - high in protein and good fats. Almond butter and natural peanut butter.
3. Yogurt - non-fat or low fat. Friendly bacteria, calcium, lactose broken down to lactic acid.
4. Hummus, Edamame, Beans - low calorie, high protein, low fat.
5. Whole Grains - high fiber, carbohydrates, a great energy source.
6. Cottage Cheese - high protein, low carbohydrate, a great evening snack food.
7. Vegetables - carrots, snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, etc…!
8. Eggs - high protein, good fats.
9. Oatmeal
10. Dried Meats - jerky, turkey (all natural - not the highly preserved kinds).
