Spiritual Causes of Illness

By Pollyann Lunetto

Imagine yourself walking through life carrying around a five-gallon container of sludge with one hand. You will most likely be leaning either to the left or right in an effort to balance yourself. Wouldn’t it be nice to let go of that heavy container filled with junk and begin to find your center, standing upright, shoulders back with a confidence that others notice? You’d be walking through life feeling balanced and at peace, wouldn’t you?

The bucket might represent trauma, hurt, anger, fear, negative thoughts and the like. These types of underlying issues tend to manifest themselves to look like depression, phobias, or addictions. Stress related problems such as anxiety, hypertension, adrenal fatigue or elevated cortisol levels could also be manifestations.  The list of medical and psychological problems, unfortunately, goes on and on.

When referring to spiritual causes of illness, the word dis-ease comes to mind; not disease, but in fact Dis-Ease, the individual’s actual state of being. The word refers to the person’s spirit or soul feeling uneasy about something. It’s the body’s way of alerting a person that something is out of balance. In psychological terms, when trauma occurs (whether physical and/or emotional), a part of the personality splits off. This is known as fragmenting. Fragmenting or dissociation occurs as a defense mechanism in an attempt to protect against any further harm. Examples of this might be ongoing abuse, which includes verbal, emotional, sexual and physical. It could be the result of an accident or even being in terrible pain as a result of any injury. In spiritual terms, more specifically, Shamanic terms, parts of the person’s spirit/soul leave or depart to a safer place. Both phenomena result in the same outcome, parts of a person are MIA; missing in action.

Therefore the goal of spiritual healing is to retrieve the fragments or parts of the person’s spirit/soul and reintegrate them into the body. This is accomplished by having an experienced Shaman or shamanic practitioner facilitate soul retrieval on your behalf. Once this is completed, the person typically experiences a sense of wholeness and many notice a stronger sense of self because they feel more complete. This allows a person to become balanced and more connected with their mind, body and spirit. It can also provide the ability to better manage the stresses of everyday life in a more productive manner.

Our world is shifting and it is providing us with opportunities to make better choices about living a more peaceful lifestyle. Spiritual healing can offer alternate avenues to well-being. This type of service complements what you may already be receiving from the medical, chiropractic, naturopathic or psychological community. It can also assist you in understanding how your state of existence came to be and how your mind, body and spirit connection can create change.
