SKIN CARE TLC FOR TRAVELERS
By Vera Fischer

Air travel can be a grueling experience.  Not only is getting from point A to point B a hassle, but it can wreak havoc on your skin.  An airplane’s low humidity (about 10%, which is drier than the driest deserts), pressurized interior, followed by exposure to a new climate, can dehydrate your face and cause blotchiness, puffy eyes,  and swollen ankles.  Other culprits of stressed skin include: jet lag, high alcohol and caffeine intake, high fat meals, and hours of breathing in germ-laden cabin air.

Because travel is tough on both body and skin, here are a few tips to keeping you looking your best when on the go:

  1. Denise Spanek, a San Francisco esthetician and beauty industry expert, suggests using products such as facial mists that instantly hydrate to soothe and calm irritated skin.
  2. Look for products that are shea butter based.  Shea acts as a protective barrier and locks in moisture.
  3. If you plan to re-hydrate your skin during flight, avoid putting on make-up before boarding. Skipping make-up may also help prevent clogged pores.
  4. Avoid alcohol before and during the flight.  Instead, drink as much water as you can.
  5. Periodically head to the restroom and splash lukewarm water on your face.  For a long flight consider soaking a washcloth or paper towel in water then place it on your face to re-hydrate, not only your skin, but nasal passages as well.
  6. Apply moisturizer or mist whenever you feel your skin start to tighten.
  7. Once you reach your destination take a long bath or shower to restore moisture to dried-out skin. Exfoliate with a good scrub to remove all the dead skin cells, followed by a hydrating mask.
