Sciatica - a.k.a “Pain in the Butt”
By Lisa DeForest, DC

An all too common complaint, one in ten Americans will suffer from sciatica or similar conditions in there lifetime. The sciatic nerves are the largest and longest nerves in the body. The size of your index finger in diameter, they run down the back of each leg. When these large nerves are irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissue, doctors refer to this as sciatica.

One of the most common causes of sciatic leg pain is the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, also known as out of alignment. Sciatic pain can be accompanied by a bulging or herniation of a disc in the lumbar region. This can irritate or put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord, resulting in intense pain shooting down one or both legs.

Chiropractors use carefully directed and controlled pressure to the affected spinal structures. Chiropractic adjustments can be quite effective in reducing nerve irritation and its associated pain. Sciatica, like other health problems that can be traced to the spine, often responds dramatically to the restoration of normal spinal function through conservative chiropractic care.

Compare all treatments for sciatica, and chiropractic care beats them by 9% in study after study. After all chiropractors are the experts in the care of bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissue, that’s 60% of your body.

Most chiropractors also give patients exercises to aid in the restoration of normal spinal function.
