Pizza Fusion: Saving the Earth One Pizza at a Time
A Healthy Times Restaurant Review
By Mike Bundrant

You can find organic food in more places these days, but you may be surprised that a new, local restaurant serves 100% organic meals. Even better news - it’s pizza.

Pizza Fusion, a national franchise with a new location in the Trader Joe’s shopping center across Winchester Road from the Promenade Mall in Temecula, is committed to saving the earth one pizza at a time. This means using only eco-friendly, organic and natural ingredients on their menu. And it means a lot more than that.  When you understand the lengths to which Pizza Fusion goes to preserve our environment you will see that, for this business, “going green” is not just marketing hype.

Pizza Fusion’s Commitment to the Earth

Pizza Fusion is demonstrating an eco-friendly, socially responsible business model by doing the following:

Delivering food in company owned hybrid vehicles
Offsetting 100% of energy usage with the purchase of renewable wind energy certificates
Recycling and giving customers discounts for bringing back pizza boxes to recycle
Using only eco-friendly cleaners to sanitize
Using 100% post-consumer recycled paper in collateral materials
Selling and providing employees only with eco-apparel made from 100% organic cotton
Serving food in plastic-like containers made from 100% corn starch that decompose in landfills in only 50 days
Using only spudware utensils that are made 100% from potatoes
Using 100% post consumer toilet paper and paper towels in all bathrooms
Printing in-store graphics on a banner material made from 100% recycled plastic soda bottles and printed using non-VOC inks
Hosting a free, organic kids class every third Thursday of the month
Donating money to environmental causes in and around our communities
Building our restaurants according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards set forth by the United States Green Building Council
Eliminating the use of water heaters and air heating units by recycling heat from our ovens to warm the restaurants and heat the water
Using CF (Compact Fluorescent) bulbs in our stores which saves on energy consumption
Using seat cushions made from soybean oil instead of petroleum based foam
Installing counter tops made from 100% recycled detergent bottles
Using panels made from recycled materials and produced with a minimal environmental footprint to build shelves and counter tops
Using a greywater system that recycles waste water from sinks into toilets and reduces 1/3 of our restaurants’ water waste annually
Using milk based paints with no VOCs
Using furniture in our stores made from reclaimed wood
Implementing a cradle-to-cradle program where we reuse glass bottles from our stores to create flooring tiles for future locations
Installing a smart lighting system in our bathrooms that automatically turns off when the bathroom is vacant
Using drywall in our build-out that is 95% post-consumer content and locally manufactured
Using FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified wood to build our cabinets and wood fixtures
Using only Energy Star Certified appliances
Using insulation made from recycled blue jeans
Using the most efficient HVAC unit on the market
Using 30% recaptured industrial concrete
Using ceiling panels made from 74% recycled aluminum cans and 24% post industrial metals

But Is The Food Good?

We should support earth-friendly businesses on principle. In this case, you’ll want to support them merely because their food is delicious. Tobi and I have eaten at Pizza Fusion several times. Our personal favorite is the BBQ chicken specialty pizza (using only naturally fed, free range chickens – hormone, antibiotic and pesticide free) – the sauce is the best I have ever tasted. Their personal size pizza is perfect for those with a healthy appetite, and more than adequate to share if you are eating light. Add a salad and some organic, herbal iced tea and you have a nice, balanced meal.

The pizza has a genuine gourmet flavor and is not heavy or greasy, a common downfall of most pizza. We’ve also enjoyed Pizza Fusion’s unique breadsticks, organic beer, wine and specialty deserts. For celiac and gluten sensitive people, you can find gluten free pizza crust and deserts. Ask about the gluten free brownie – dark, rich and fulfilling. You’ll want to split this one with a friend.

What About the Price?

Some organic, gourmet food is quite expensive. At Pizza Fusion, you can expect to pay a competitive price for a meal – about what you’d pay at any mid-range restaurant. When we were there, the lunch special included a personal pizza, salad and a drink for $9.00. According to Ian, the local store manager, business is robust.

Final Thoughts

As the world adopts greener standards, we can expect to see more and more businesses taking advantage of the trend. We consumers want to see continued changes in business practices as we usher in a new era of social responsibility. Pizza Fusion isn’t just cashing in on the trend; they are leading the way – and setting the bar high.
