What’s Holding You Back from your Perfect Weight?
By Brenda Piper

What’s holding you back from achieving your perfect weight?  Well, let me tell you the truth.  The answer isn’t just about nutrition and exercise.  It’s your paradigms or what I will call your habits and beliefs.  They’re truly and honestly holding you back from achieving your perfect weight. What do I mean by habits and beliefs?  Let me give you a few examples:

  • I can’t live without chocolate, pizza, beer, etc.
  • Nothing works for me.
  • I can’t fight my fat genes.  There’s nothing I can do about it.
  • Since I exercised, I can have that piece of chocolate cake.
  • I can’t stay on diets.
  • I don’t have time for exercise.
  • My family won’t let me eat healthy.
  • I can’t exercise, my knees are bad.
  • Since I already ruined my diet for the day, I might as well keep on going.
  • Eating my candy bar in the afternoon makes me feel better.
  • It’s the fault of other people that I’m fat.

Now, ask yourself, “How are these beliefs serving you?”  They probably aren’t doing you any good.  I call this “stinking thinking.”  So what can you do - this is just the way you think and you can’t change it.  Stop right there because you can change your thoughts.  When you start to change your thoughts, combined with your feelings or emotions, change is soon on its way.

Here are steps to changing your beliefs and habits to get you in the right frame of mind and moving toward your perfect weight.  Yes, it can be done.  We all have the power to control our thoughts, and thus our actions, to achieve permanent results.

Step One:  Stop lying to yourself.  Yes, you have to admit it.  You’re lying to yourself when you think or say things like, “I am healthy just the way I am,” “I don’t really eat much,” “I really do eat healthy,” “ I couldn’t help myself,” “ I had to eat it,” “ I don’t know why I’m overweight”.  List the lies that you tell yourself.  Drop the justification, just list the lies.

Another way to look at what you’re telling yourself is to ask yourself, “What thoughts come to mind when you’re confronted with temptation?”  Is it, “It’s okay to indulge and eat that cookie this one time,” “It’s just one, it can’t do any harm,” “I deserve it.”  You keep telling yourself this at each get-together and 10 pounds, to your surprise, arrive.

            Okay now what?

Step Two:  We need to replace these negative beliefs with empowering, positive thoughts of your desired outcome (the image of yourself at your perfect weight).  So, let’s choose one right now and rewrite it.  For example, take a negative thought such as “Nothing works for me, I’ve tried everything” and change it to a positive thought such as “I am discovering what works for me to achieve my perfect weight.  This is a lifestyle plan.”

Step Three:  Write down your answers to these 3 questions:

  1. What is working for me?
  2. What isn’t working?
  3. What’s getting in the way of my progress?

Step Four:  Finally accept and forgive yourself.  This is an ongoing lifestyle change and it will take time.  Set a goal of improving by 1% per day.  You can achieve what you believe.  Examine and recognize your beliefs and habits with regards to your weight, change them and take action.  Eventually the thoughts you hold in your mind will manifest themselves into physical form.  As Earl Nightingale, one of the pioneers in the self improvement industry said, “You become what you think about.”  What are your thoughts about your perfect weight?  Look in the mirror and you’ll have your answer.
