THE MOUTH-BODY CONNECTION
By Dr. Ruby Dollins

Oral infections have been linked with osteoporosis, heart disease, pregnancy problems, diabetes, respiratory diseases and other systemic health problems. Heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, and lead  can be involved in a wide range of health problems that have neurological, cardio-vascular, gastro-intestinal, and other symptoms.

Integrative dental medicine emphasizes an understanding of how dental diseases and systemic diseases interrelate.

Detection of oral infections in the soft and hard tissues of the mouth (gums, teeth and jaws) is important in the prevention and treatment of many diseases. Oral infections are a source of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms release by-products called toxicants. In addition to x-rays and clinical examination, tests such as the TOPAS I & II and the CAVITAT can help to diagnose chronic infections even before they are detectable by x-ray.

Avoidance of materials that contain known toxins and the careful selection of dental materials based on their biological compatibility is also important in the prevention and treatment of diseases.  Amalgam is made up of various metals such as mercury, copper, tin and silver. Research has clearly shown that mercury can damage brain cell in a way that is identical to what is seen in Altzheimer's disease.  The combination of dissimilar metals in the mouth, such as gold alloys, chrome-cobalt alloys, orthodontic brackets and wires, will lead to galvanic corrosion, resulting in the release of corrosion by-products in the mouth as well as the production of electrical currents which may cause damage to living tissues. The biological significance of these electrical currents in close proximity to the central nervous system is not well understood and further research is needed. White filling materials can be a problem as well. Glass ionomers, a fluoride based silicaceous gel, may contain residues of lead and arsenic. Commonly used so-called plastic fillings may not be suitable if they have not been properly tested for bio-compatibility. As a rule careful avoidance is the the most prudent course of action.
