Memory and Other Cognitive Improvement Proven in Recent Glyconutrient Study
A recently published double blind placebo study in the Perceptual Motor Skills Journal, 2009, 108, clearly revealed that supplementation with glyconutrients significantly impacts cognition and memory. Since mental function plays a critical role in our health and well-being, this is quite a significant finding.
First, let's understand glyconutrients. In the late 1970's, a discovery was made that the human cell is covered with certain simple carbohydrates, monosaccharides, all of which are found in plants. These saccharides were found to be responsible for the cellular communication for all cells in the human body. The study of these simple sachharides which are now called the glycosylation on the human cell, is called the science of glycobiology. Glycobiology is now taught in every medical school and many medical professionals agree with Dr Gerald Hart assessment: “This is going to be the future, declares biochemist Gerald Hart of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. We won’t understand immunology, neurology, developmental biology or disease until we get a handle on glycobiology.”
New Scientist, “Sweetness and Might: Awesome power of the glycome” October 26, 2002, p. 34.
Now back to the study results. The study shared the history of glyconutrient supplementation studies as they impact the brain function by revealing the following series of historical data:
- Glyconutrient and phytonutrient supplementation plays a role in enhancing cognitive function in children. “Reduction in Attention Deficit Disorder functions were observed after 6 weeks of administration…” (Dykman and Dykman, 1998).
- Evidence was shown electroencephalo-graphic (EEG) brain activity in frontal lobe areas were positively influenced by glyconutrient consumption. (Wang, Szabo and Dykman, 2004). Electrode recordings showed increased power in the beta alpha and theta frequency bands.
- Glyconutritional and phytonutrient supplementation reported to improve the sense of right-left direction and verbal ability in dyslexic individuals. (Benton, 1997).
This current study focused on perception, cognition, and memory in healthy adults. The direction was to assess college age
students’ performance on certain perception, cognitive and memory tasks after glyconturient supplementation. All tests were run as double blind placebo whereby the students were put through the tests were taken over a two week period, one while on a glyconutrient supplement and the other with the placebo. The students were tested 35 minutes after consumption.
Experiment 1: In the visual perception test the student were given a computer generated visual discrimination test. The test shows the participants’ ability to integrate multiple relations (activities). Students were also given the Stroop Test providing a measurement of attention.
Experiment 2: In the second test students were given a Reading Span and Operation Span tasks as a measure of simple and complex working memory.
Results: The results of the first study showed that there was a significant improvement of perceptual discrimination with glyconutrient supplementation versus placebo. The reaction time was also shorter. In the second experiment the tests indicated a significant difference in performance between the supplemented and the control groups on the simple working-memory tasks. Finding of other studies concerning glyconutrients have shown that they are present in the neuromuscular regions and influence cholinergic processes which play a role in memory formation.
