An Introduction to Colon Hydrotherapy Colon hydrotherapy (irrigation of the colon) has now moved into the forefront of modern integrative medicine. Colon health is the most neglected aspect of body maintenance. The liver, the body's purifier, pulls blood from the colon to detoxify the body. If the colon is dirty the blood is dirty. Anyone who is constipated or experiences headaches, low energy, and digestive problems, to name a few symptoms, can benefit from colonics. Most colon therapy systems are designed to use filtered and sanitized water, disposable nozzles and hygienic equipment in a comfortable setting with the intent to evacuate the contents of the bowel. Stress, poor diet and lack of water are the main causes of constipation and fecal impaction of the colon. Millions of people suffer from back up of the bowel and seek symptomatic remedy through laxatives or purgatives, which can irritate the lining of the bowel and create swings in bowel performance. Laxatives are the second leading over the counter drug sold in America. But, simply cleaning out the bowel with clean water affords the client relief without negative side effects of drugs. Bowel training also occurs through strengthening the muscular performance of the bowel. A good colon hydrotherapist will also instruct the client on useful lifestyle habits including stress management, whole foods and healthy diets, exercise, as well as the proper amount of ph-balanced water. Though an ancient practice, the need for bowel sanitation and cleanliness has been neglected for years. Bowel movements every two to three days are now considered normal and acceptable, when in fact the body is designed to eliminate 2 or 3 times a day. When the colon is not eliminating effectively the recycling of microscopic waste material occurs through the colon wall and the portal blood vein into the liver. This unnecessarily burdens the entire body and all its organ systems, which are interconnected. Removing waste by colon irrigation relieves the burden on the system. Open colonic irrigation systems are devised to allow treated water to flow from a hypoallergenic tank and through a sterilized nozzle into the rectum in order to cleanse (evacuate) the contents of the colon. The Angel of Water (an open system) is a state of the art, FDA approved colonic hydrotherapy system. It allows the client a private, safe, comfortable and hygienic experience. The tank is filled with tempered water controlled by a water mixing valve. The proper temperature of the water falls between 99-103 degrees fahrenheit and is monitored by a gauge visible on the front of the tower cabinet. If at any time the water rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit, a sensor control will shut off the flow valve, stopping water flow to the client. After the client is comfortably positioned, the rectal nozzle is self inserted about 1 inch. A gentle flow of gravity-fed, one hundred degree water begins. Water flowing into the colon initiates peristalsis and the client responds by releasing water and waste repeatedly for approximately 35 minutes. This progressive irrigation starting at the rectum, going through the transverse section, and then to the cecum at the beginning of the lower bowel breaks up waste matter and achieves the complete evacuation of the colon. The result is a hydrated, hygienic internal environment. A typical colon hydrotherapy session lasts approximately 30-40 minutes. At the end of the session, the client slides back off the nozzle. The client can now drain comfortably on the ergonomic basin, sitting up or leaning back in a lounge position to fully drain the colon. The client can then rinse the body using a personal shower then towel dry before dressing and leaving the privacy of the colon irrigation room.
