Healthy Times Ahead - Dec 05

I commented in the Oct/Nov issue that my higher level of physical health was supporting me through my divorce.  I still claim this is true, but must confess that my level of resolve in the area of diet and nutrition began to fail me roughly a month ago. I’ll spare you the details and just say that my children at one point dubbed me their new superhero, Donut Man!

After the first couple of days of dietary indiscretion, I began to feel a certain “heaviness” settle in mentally.  After a week I can honestly say I was thoroughly depressed.  After 2 weeks I had begun to feel my old spare tire come back to life.  My problem of breaking out into cold sweats resurfaced.  And, I began to be increasingly angry at my situation in life.

After 3 weeks my kids, who had gotten used to feeling good on a clean diet, began to beg me to stop buying all the junk.  They, too, were feeling the effects of the damaging food and wanted relief.  After a month of hell, I have returned to a clean diet and am beginning to feel better physically.

Interesting how many of us toy with our lives in this way, isn’t it?  This is something worth pondering, as I believe it is ultimately a life-or-death issue.  I imagine that if my little detour had been permanent, both the quality and length of my life would be compromised.

On a more hopeful note, reading the article submitted by the incomparable Jack Lalanne really helped.  I realized that I needed to increase my physical activity to compensate for my dramatically increased caloric intake and the higher level of toxic food I was eating…so I added a second daily work out.  And I did notice results…I always walk out of the gym feeling much better than when I walked in.

Marilu Henner is back again with the second part of our exclusive interview.  Reading this interview, one cannot help but be inspired to greater levels of personal responsibility in the area of health and wellness.

I’ve also been inspired by people in general – from readers of Healthy Times who have made connections in the community they might not have otherwise made – to advertisers who have found that readers of Healthy Times tend to be people who make excellent clients.  And I’ve even been inspired by strangers – such as a woman I noticed in Sprouts Natural Market in Temecula who was excited to report to a friend that she had found all natural household cleaners there that did not cause her to have headaches when she does her cleaning.

I started Healthy Times, in part, because these are the lessons I need to learn.  And again, I am deeply grateful to all of our advertisers and columnists who are here to point the way to greater well-being and offer us the resources we need to improve ourselves.

May your detours be few, and temporary….
