Every Day of Your Life is a Miracle Unfolding
By Robert Resewehr
Every day of your life is a miracle unfolding; a miracle that each of us takes for granted. We are on a planet that is spinning at 1040 MPH, traveling through space 66,700 MPH around a sun that is also moving through space. Yet, we don’t even notice it. Pretty miraculous, wouldn’t you say! Every day the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. These facts you can depend upon. Every day is a miracle from the time you wake, until the time you go to sleep.
Your body is a miracle in itself, no matter what your opinion is of it at the time. You don’t have to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, your food to digest, or your waste system to eliminate, nor our brain to function. Although, many of us do have hearts that beat too fast, lungs that don’t breathe adequately, too much good food to digest, elimination that frequently asks for assistance, and brains that either work too much or not well enough. For those fortunate enough to have adequate health care there is medicine that can regulate your heart, help you with your digestion, aid in elimination, and numerous practitioners to help with over-working brains. As for brains that don’t function well enough there is education, etc.
This issue of Healthy Times encompasses Thanksgiving, a time set aside originally for the purpose of giving thanks for the blessings we enjoy. It seems that it is much easier these days to notice the things that are wrong, or missing in our lives: People losing their homes, jobs being lost, Government being too much or too little according to your opinion, the rising price of fuel for your vehicle, food costs going up, relationships ending, or perhaps even illness. Yet, the miracle of life goes on. Every day I choose to be thankful for the miracles that have been graciously bestowed on me, instead of sitting on the pity pot feeling sorry for myself.
How about focusing on what’s good about your life, and being grateful for what you have. Maybe it’s as simple as: Am I healthy? Did I eat today? Do I have a place to live today? Do I have clean clothes to wear? People have accused me of rationalizing a bad situation. This always reminds me of the expression, “Ration of lies.” I can choose to see my glass half empty or half full. I choose half full. I can speak for no one else, nor force my beliefs on anyone, but my God gives me all that I need, not always what I want.
As I said, I do not get all that I want, but I have always gotten all that I need. I always say that getting what I need is a good place to start getting what I want. Gratitude is the beginning.
To offer a small example, a friend was visiting my house and, as we were about to sit down in my living room, I noticed tiny ants all over my coffee table. Being a bachelor, I take many of my meals in the living room and don’t always clean the table as well as I might. Having a sight impaired dog, I was at a loss as to how to handle this situation, considering I refuse to use harmful insecticides and do not wish to hire an exterminator. My friend got out a product by Avon called Skin So Soft and squeezed a line of it where the ants were coming in. We then went about sending the ants in the house back to God. Low and behold, the ants inside would not cross over the Skin So Soft, and the ants seeking to come in, didn’t come in. To me, this is a miracle, granted a small one, depending on your prospective.
Some people call everyday miracles mere coincidences. They are completely entitled to do so. But as for me, miracles happen all day long. It helps me to live in gratitude and when I am grateful I am not angry or sad, but feel good. Interestingly, the movie “The Secret” says that if you are experiencing gratitude, you are opening yourself up for more good to come into your life.
In closing, be grateful for all the little miracles in your everyday life. The smile of a loved one, a flower in bloom, the comfort of a friend, the joy of being in a free country, the food you eat, and walk through each day as if it were a miracle gift given to you, because it is.
