Energy Medicine, A Breakthrough for Optimal Health and Wellness

By Graham Player Ph.D.

Many people may not be aware that there are discoveries being made and breakthroughs happening as a result of the coming together of quantum physics, cellular biology and the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese Medicine which may transform our understanding of disease, health, how to get well, and how to stay well.

This is occurring as some of the worlds leading scientists, health practitioners, biologists, biophysicists and professors work together to introduce to us all, the results of their concerted efforts. One major focus of this introduction is a full length feature film / documentary on this very subject which premieres in London on Friday March 13, 2009. The film is called “The Living Matrix” which for those interested you will quite easily find on an internet search.

I feel this represents the emergence of what I believe will be The Science of Energy Medicine. Energy Medicine is not a new concept. In fact the U.S. Government National Institutes of Health have a definition for energy medicine which refers to it as follows:

A complementary and alternative medicine that deals with energy fields of two types – veritable (that which can be measured) and putative (which has yet to be measured).

The veritable energies employ mechanical vibrations (such as sound) and electromagnetic forces, including visible light, magnetism, monochromatic radiation (such as laser beams), and rays from other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. They involve the use of specific, measurable wavelengths and frequencies to treat patients. There are many well-established uses for the application of measurable energy fields to diagnose or treat diseases: electromagnetic fields in magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac pacemakers, radiation therapy, ultraviolet light for psoriasis, laser keratoplasty, and more.

In contrast, putative energy fields (also called biofields) have defied measurement to date by reproducible methods. Therapies involving putative energy fields are based on the concept that human beings are infused with a subtle form of energy. This vital energy or life force is known under different names in different cultures, such as qi in traditional Chinese medicine, ki in the Japanese Kampo system, doshas in Ayurvedic medicine, and elsewhere as prana, etheric energy, fohat, orgone, odic force, mana, and homeopathic resonance. Vital energy is believed to flow throughout the material human body, but it has not been measured by means of conventional instrumentation. The concept that sickness and disease arise from imbalances in the vital energy field of the body has led to many forms of therapy, including acupuncture, qi gong, homeopathy, and  more.

Many studies have been done on the clinical effects of therapies based on veritable energies. In fact, a quick search (look for ‘electromagnetic therapy’) through the database of records of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (freely available online via PubMed) will reveal this to you. You will find there, factual clinical studies, usually done within prominent universities, from countries such as Germany, Serbia, China, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, USA, etc which reveal there is ample evidence that low intensity electromagnetic fields do have beneficial influences on the body – although how and why that occurs has not been discovered. Science today can only speculate on why this could be the case. Although if you get an opportunity to watch the film The Living Matrix you will see explanations from some of the world’s top scientists, biologists and biophysicists that may give some of the answers.

We know that we are made of many trillions of cells, and also know that they all need to communicate in order to produce a coherent state of homeostasis. We also know that the function and metabolism of the human body is an electrochemical system. Modern medicine has been preoccupied with studying, analyzing and treating mainly the chemical side of the equation. For the most part, the electrical half of human systems has been largely ignored. Physiology reveals that most of the body's natural chemicals are released by an electrical signal or an electrochemical reaction. So with this in mind, how do our cells communicate to support such a coherent human system and to maintain our wellness? It is believed to be through a combination of chemical and electromagnetic communication. A complex system such as this needs strict control, coordination, monitoring and maintenance. In fact our body depends on a very well established support system, which is believed to occur in our brain or mind, which is 95% of the time, in its subconscious state. Without our being consciously aware, our subconscious mind operates and regulates much of our body’s systems. It is our database of habits and orchestrates our habitual conduct. So it is quite understandable that the subconscious mind has a major influence on our state of health. In fact we are what we (subconsciously) think and feel we are. Our bodies (and cells) become the product of our habits and thoughts.

This is a big step away from the theory that our genes are controlling our biology. There is ample proof available today in the field of biology that genes are not controlling our biology as was previously thought. My belief is that our thoughts and our habits affect our health by communicating instruction and initiating reactions in our body to become us! This communication occurs at the cellular level. So what if we were able to tap into this communication? What if we were able to assess via this communication the state of our organs, tissues, and bodily processes? What if we were able to detect via this communication the presence of heavy metals, environmental toxins, bacteria, viruses? What if we were able via this communication to protect and help the body to heal itself? I believe that this is where Energy Medicine is taking us.
