Drumming To Awaken Your Spirit
By Iah Ka Onge-Ja

Rhythm is the heartbeat of life. The sound of the drum awakens our hearts.  There is a deep, innate knowing within each one of us that when we drum, we become one with what we are made of, we become one with the voice of creation, that primal rhythm that pulses within all that exists.

Drum circles are becoming more popular today.   A drum circle is a group of people gathering in a circle and playing music with hand-drums and percussion instruments.  It is a fun way to create beautiful, spontaneous music involving everyone regardless of age, musical experience or ability.

A shamanic drum circle creates a sacred spiritual environment for healing and meditation.  Shamanism is an ancient practice by indigenous tribes to maintain a deep connection to Spirit.  Shamans have used drumming for thousands of years to resonate with the pulse of Mother Earth’s heart in order to be in harmony with the cycles of nature.  Drumming on the night of the full moon is a great way to rapidly restore our own balance and harmony.

The drum is a powerful catalyst for healing.  Drumming stops the chatter in our minds and alters our consciousness in such a way that we can hear our own inner voice.  Feelings of peacefulness and spiritual well-being are common, along with a feeling of oneness with the rhythms of the universe.  You can drum by yourself, but when a group drums together, the healing power expands on multi-dimensional levels.

There are other kinds of drum circles being used for a variety of purposes;  corporations and organizations for stress-relief, team building and conferences; schools for a fun, experiential activity that promotes multi-cultural learning; hospitals and health care facilities for recreation and therapy; community organizations for festivals and special events.
