Gentle Detoxification with Ayurveda
By Kelly Luvera

According to Ayurveda, ancient Indian natural medicine, good health is dependent on our ability to metabolize the nutritional, emotional and sensory information we ingest. When our digestive fire, known as agni, is strong, we are vital, we eliminate waste products efficiently and produce a subtle essence called ojas. Ojas, which may be envisioned as the foundation of our psychophysiology, is the basis for our clarity of perception, physical strength and immunity. If our agni is weak, digestion is incomplete, resulting in the accumulation of toxic residues, ama.

According to Ayurveda, the accumulation of toxins leads to obstructions in the flow of energy, information and nourishment. It’s the cause of disease. Physical impurities have their counterparts in the mind, where negative emotions such as fear, anger, stress and guilt create mental impurities. Undigested experiences become toxic, like undigested food.  These ‘mental toxins’ obstruct the flow of positive feelings and mental clarity, resulting in chronic psychological and emotional distress.

Signs and symptoms of toxicity may manifest in the following ways: Indigestion, loss of appetite, fatigue, general aching, joint pain, bad breath, irritability and depression.

A major goal of Ayurvedic treatments is the elimination of impurities from the system. This is accomplished by digesting toxins that have accumulated and by minimizing the possibility for further toxicity through appropriate diet and behavior.

Panchakarma, meaning “five actions,” is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and soul. The treatments help release physical and emotional toxicity, which allows the body to naturally balance and restore health. Through a variety of treatments including abhyanga (oleation), swedana (steam), herbal wraps, shirodhara, nasya (nasal therapy) and basti (herbal enemas) along with proper preparation through nutrition, you can achieve more balance and lightness in your body and mind.

Through panchakarma you can eliminate toxins in your body and mind, strengthening your immune system, reverse the effects of stress on your body and mind, improve your strength, energy and vitality and achieve a sense of well being.

Ayurveda recommends panchakarma treatments at the change of seasons, ideally at the beginning of spring, fall and winter. At Abundant Health Wellness center, the Panchakarma program begins with three days of home preparation followed by five days of treatments.

A light detoxification at home can help you feel lighter, sleep better and reset your digestive fire.
We suggest performing the following activities for seven days:
1. Every morning, perform a self massage with sesame oil. When stimulated through massage, the skin releases a pharmacy of healing chemicals with healthy effects. In addition to feeling good, regular massage and loving touch detoxifies the body’s tissues, increases circulation, calms the mind and enhances immune function.
2. Follow your massage with a neti pot rinse and nasya oil, a traditional method to purify and revitalize the breathing passages. In addition, this process can reduce allergies and decrease your chances of contracting upper respiratory infections.
3. Take the herbal formula triphala. Formulated by Ayurvedic physicians thousands of years ago and used by billions of people since, triphala is considered an effective colon tonic by most health care practitioners.
4. Drink three to four cups of ginger tea with honey and lemon, or dosha-specific ayurvedic teas, per day to help flush the system.
5. Simplify your diet to cooked vegetables and rice to allow your digestive power to work on cleansing the body.
6.  Take time to rest and reflect, perform lighter activities, gentle yoga, walking outdoors and keeping a journal.
