Dear Friends:
I am neither a writer nor an expert in the fields of health and wellness. What I am, however, is student of the human condition. This has been brought on by my recent 4-year ordeal with Diabetes. All too often it takes a wake up call of this magnitude to bring about a concern and effective change in one’s outlook on life. Quite frankly, many of us are guilty of abusing this wonderful body that God gave us. It took me 44 years of constant abuse of sugar and caffeine before my body finally said “enough is enough”.
Have you ever looked at the word disease? Hyphenate it ( dis - ease), meaning our body is no longer at ease. Our bodies use disease to signal us that there is something wrong or that we are out of balance. Disease can manifest itself at any time and any place for any reason. While modern American medicine will give little credence to the holistic approach to health, it is a widely known and well-founded fact that the underlying cause to most of today’s ailments is "Stress"!
Lets look at stress for a moment in its various forms. First and foremost is physical stress. Physical stress is defined as “an outside force exerting stress to the point of fatigue”. In other words the stress becomes so great that it will damage whatever it is affecting should the stress not subside. Exercise would be a physical form of desired stress.
Mental stress, real or imagined, bogs the mind down with conflicting thoughts, clouded thinking, road rage, depression and even physical ailments that are manifested by our mind.
The last is environmental stress. These stresses are naturally occurring and man made. Things like inclement weather are natural stresses as well as things like pollution, noise, or additives to our food and water supply. All these things are man made.
So we now know the #1 culprit in our day to day aches and pains. Our mental and physical well-being are all directly related to one thing and one thing only, "STRESS"! NOW WHAT? We as a people need to take back our lives; we need to be accountable for our mental and physical well-being.
How do we do that? First, we need to prioritize our lives and know what’s important to us. We need to quit burning the candle at both ends. The body needs 8 hours of sleep, no more and no less. This has been confirmed by Dr. Steven Galarza in a sleep study conducted over the course of the last 20 years. It’s been found that those who get less than 8 hours of sleep and those who sleep more than 8 hours both suffer from an increased mortality rate of almost 20%.
Secondly, (this is going to make me real popular with the starbucks and carbonated energy drinks crowd) you need to cut out caffeine consumption. Caffeine is a very powerful and addictive stimulant - one that has most people needing coffee or a soft drink every couple hours just to keep up their self induced momentum. Then, when the day is done you’re so wired you can’t get a decent nights sleep. Have you ever gone without caffeine for more than a day? Ever have a caffeine headache? Doesn’t it seem odd to you that food manufacturers put sugar and caffeine into everything, even products that don’t need them or have them occur naturally? It couldn’t be they want us addicted to their products, could it?
Third, we all need to take time at the end of our day to relax and decompress. Whether listening to some relaxing music, going for a walk or reading a book. If you must watch TV, watch something “lite”, not CNN or things that add to your stress. We need to enjoy our loved ones more as they need us too.
We also need to take a more proactive and preventative, holistic approach to our health. It is our life and our body. We need to watch what we put into it. What is better, taking better care of ourselves, putting good things into our bodies giving us what we need to fend off illness…or sitting back and waiting for illness to strike and then taking the reactionary path we have always taken?
