SPIRITUALLY RESPONSIBLE LIVING Many of us assume the posture that we are spiritual beings having human experiences. We may have made the choice to live and operate from that place. In my life, and in my work, I call it being spiritually responsible. It feels very much to me like the ancient teaching to be in the world, not of it. We know that spirituality is always on, applicable everywhere, and that there are infinite ways to practice it. The path I have carved out for myself and that I work with in my writing, teaching, and counseling consists of adhering to and living by the 15 concepts listed above which are non-religious, religion-friendly and universally spiritual. I did not make them up; rather, they were culled from the abundance of teachings available to seekers like us at the dawn of a new age. My passion is to help us see how they show up in daily life. As an example of what I mean, let’s look through the lens of these concepts at the heavy topic of “the death of a loved one.” Now the moment I call “the death of a loved one” a heavy topic is the moment I judge it and the moment I judge it is the moment I separate myself from it. For now I am relating to the judgment, the heaviness. I feel the heaviness going into it; I am thinking of it as heavy; I am relating it to other heavy things; I am expecting it to be heavy; etc. With one word, I am removed from the experience itself; without that word – that judgment – I am free to discover for myself what that experience might be. The experience of “the death of a loved one” is as personal as it is universal; what will make the difference in how we each experience it, still looking through the lens, is what we believe. If I believe it will be heavy, that is how I will experience it. If I believe it will be enlightening and life-affirming, that is how I will experience it. If I believe I should be open to what unfolds, I will experience an unfolding. That’s why beliefs matter… because they pretty much dictate the experiences we will have. Looking at “the death of a loved one” through the lens of the concepts also reminds me that beliefs and judgments are no more, really, than specific types of thoughts. And because thoughts are things and everything is energy and everything vibrates at one frequency or another, they attract to themselves (via the law of attraction), other thoughts like them. This is how we experience what we think about. So it is incumbent upon spiritually responsible people to know whether or not the thoughts/beliefs/ judgments we are carrying around and using are our own or ones we have picked up along the way and are parroting automatically. Fluency in the practical application of these concepts is but a single way for spiritually responsible beings to practice anchoring more and more light as we contribute to the evolution of our species. Let us encourage and support one another’s efforts whatever they may be. P E A C E .
