National Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Let’s talk prevention!
By Dr. Scott Sebastian

San Diego is known as a place of empowerment for women. Women in this area of Southern California are known for having a take charge attitude and work successfully to fulfill their dreams.

To show your strength many of you are participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer walks and other philanthropic efforts that support finding a cure for this unbelievably common disease. Sadly, everyone either knows someone that has had breast cancer, or is currently dealing with it.

Why do we walk and fight for a cure?  Because suddenly, when you, or someone you love discovers a lump in your breast, and the biopsy comes back positive for cancer, that strength and desire gets taken away and is replaced with despair, confusion and  immense fear.  We then turn our bodies over to the medical community and hope that the bad tissue is removed and that it never comes back. Many women at that point perform a lifestyle change to prevent recurrence.

What if you had another way to fight? Would you?  I’d like to talk to you about how you can do so... naturally!

Upon removal of the bad tissue, an empowered woman can manifest her destiny into flawless victory and start living prevention. Prevention starts before the lump is found.  Prevention means doing all of the things necessary to give your body the best chance you can to avoid ever finding a lump.  Some of the prevention strategies you probably already know about and are doing. Some you may not have thought of.

Common causes of breast cancer are excess caffeine, smoking, and alcohol. Clinical obesity or being overweight is also risk factor. But one of the most dangerous of the factors is stress.

There are several types of stress that affect the body. The two most common and most deadly (when not managed and mitigated) are physical and emotional stress.

Physical stress can be brought on by a number of influences from actual physical trauma, lack of exercise and tension release, to emotional stress causing fatigue.  Poor posture brought on by physical and emotional catalysts cause immense strain on the body and nervous system. Poor posture also indicates vertebral subluxation which is an issue in impaired immune function, a cancer cause. Subluxations can be treated by your chiropractor.

I mentioned that physical stress can be brought on by a lack exercise.  If you are in too much pain to exercise due to fibromyalgia or fatigue my advice is to start with a natural physician first, such as a chiropractor.  This type of practitioner will take a more holistic approach to your body and entire person and will look to restore your health from the inside-out.

Emotional stress can be caused by physical stress, pain, or by a series of  uncontrolled personal situations. Physical and emotional stresses often feed off of each other and so it is extremely important to heal your entire self rather than just band-aid the symptoms.  A few healing strategies for emotional stress are:

Take time outs: take at least 20 minutes each day to something that gives you pleasure. Gardening, exercise, reading, or listening to music are good choices.
Breathe deeply: Deep breathe prior to and concurrent with a stressful situation. Deep diaphragmatic breathing tells our brain to relax.
Practice staying calm in stressful situations: Yes, you can re program your stress response with practice!
Get enough sleep
Laugh it off: The more you laugh, the easier life gets.
Get a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic care is the quickest and most effective way to release stress from your nervous system

We may never fully understand the impact stress has on a person’s body, mind, and soul.  However, there is a technology that is readily available to the woman in Southern California that measures internal organ stress. This is a non-invasive technology called “BioMeridian”.  The process gently and accurately assesses imbalances in the body. It color codes various systems so that not only can you see problem areas, but you can also chart improvements from lifestyle changes when you follow up with a retest.  To reach optimal health, the BioMeridian should be used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments for physical realignment, as well as any of the other healing strategies listed above.

There has never been a better time to put your faith and trust for good future health in the hands of  your chiropractor. Practicing holistic health care and chiropractic for 20 years, Dr. Sebastian has coached thousands of people of all ages and occupations to take full responsibility for their health.  He owns and operates Leucadia Chiropractic located at 280 N.
