Autism
Is Treatable – The Benefits of a Specific Form of Vitamin B12
Kurt N. Woeller, D.O.
Autism is treatable! This statement is true despite the erroneous claims
of our medical profession that children with autistic-spectrum disorders
will never recover. Through the simple use of a specific B-vitamin called
methylcobolamin many children with an autistic-spectrum disorder have recovered,
while others have greatly improved their capacity for spontaneous language
and communication, eye contact, social engagement, environmental awareness
and more.
There is a current epidemic of autism in this country. Over the past 15
years the number of autistic cases has been skyrocketing at an alarming
rate. Neurological disorders, especially autism, are now at epidemic levels.
The Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC and the American Academy
of Pediatrics issued a statement in January 2004 that 1 in 166 children
in the United States are diagnosed with autism and 1 in 6 children are diagnosed
with a developmental and/or behavioral disorder.
Children with autism process and respond to information
in unique ways. In some cases, aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior
may be present. Some of the more common traits of an autistic child are
listed below:
• Resistance to change
• Repeats words or phrases in place of normal language
• Prefers to be alone; aloof manner
• Little or no eye contact
• Sustained odd play
• Spins objects or self-spins
• Inappropriate attachments to objects
• Apparent over-sensitivity/under-sensitivity to pain
• Not responsive to verbal cues; acts as if deaf although hearing
tests in normal range.
Because of this epidemic the need is great for a safe and effective therapy
that can help a large percentage of autism patients improve their health.
Methylcobolamin has this potential.
Research has shown that a large percentage of autistic-spectrum individuals
have certain biochemical abnormalities that do not allow their bodies
to process and eliminate poisons such as heavy metals like mercury and
lead and other environmental toxins. These same biochemical abnormalities
also affect their immune system and inhibit the normal function of DNA
and the production of brain chemicals.
The imbalanced production of brain chemicals is partly responsible for
the language and attention problems seen with so many autistic individuals.
Methylcobolamin (B12) significantly helps improve these areas. It is not
being used because of a B12 deficiency but because of a dependency on
this specific form of B12 to support certain biochemical pathways associated
with detoxification. The key is using the right type of methylcobolamin
with a proper concentration and route of administration.
James Neubrander, M.D. (www.drneubrander.com) has
discovered that a simple subcutaneous (under the skin) injection of methylcobolamin
is the most effective form of this therapy. Using a small insulin needle,
the injection is given every 3 days. Sublingual or oral forms may be helpful
but need to be dosed more frequently and are nowhere near as effective
as the injection.
To administer this therapy, parents must give the injections to their
children themselves. At first this may seem alarming, but even the most
timid parents quickly recognize that the injection is easy, quick and
painless for their child. Many parents actually administer the injection
while their children are asleep and their kids do not even wake up! This
procedure is safe and effective.
I have seen many children quickly respond with increased expressive language,
eye contact, attention capacity and willingness to socialize within the
first 5 weeks of therapy. In my practice, approximately 60 to 70% of autistic-spectrum
children will have noticeable positive changes within the first 5 weeks
while others are more subtle responders. Overall, greater than 90% of
children ultimately respond favorably to this simple and effective treatment.
The use of methylcobolamin has truly become an amazing therapy for many
children suffering with an autistic-spectrum disorder. Please note that
the methylcobolamin injections are a prescription item only that need
to be ordered from a specialized compounding pharmacy certified in the
processing of methylcobolamin. Dr. Neubrander’s website has more
specific pharmacy and dosing information.
Our approach to autism incorporates biomedical interventions such as the
methylcobolamin injections already discussed. This system of health care
incorporates specialized diagnostic testing, dietary modification, nutritional
supplements, medications, etc.
This approach stems from the belief that autistic-spectrum children, children
with and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other
neuro-developmental disorders are dealing with biological and toxicity
issues that are compromising their health. We believe that autism and
its related spectrum disorders are more than just a psychological condition
without hope for cure or improvement. Our experience utilizing specialized
diets, anti-yeast treatment, personalized supplements, methylcobolamin
injections and heavy metal detoxification therapies holds great promise
for significant cognitive improvement and sometimes full recovery.
