FADS: False Advice Delivers Sorrow  - For Your Pet

By Mark Johnson

There have been many ads seen over the years on television or articles written in health newspapers promoting their product as the next greatest. Many washed up movie stars associate their name to a particular food in hopes of keeping their name out there, but when it comes to true nutrition, their product falls well short.  Large pet companies will put the majority of their money in sappy commercials linked with some type of charitable organization, luring customers but failing to provide the wholesome nutrition our pets need to strive.  It can be somewhat appalling to watch marketing campaigns explode in the pet food industry that just hide the truth. Stock profits are more important than real nutrition. It also says that profits are more important than your animal’s life.

Here are a few gimmicks to watch out for:

Lite Diet Foods: beware of “lite” diets that can actually cause weight gain in the long run.  Symptom-specific diets are simply a profitable marketing tool at best and a toxic food at worst.  Commonly used fillers such as ground peanut hulls may be filling, but void of nutrients. They can also be damaging to the sensitive lining of the digestive tract. Peanuts are also a crop that is heavily sprayed with pesticides, therefore the hull is very toxic. In a reduced calorie diet, nutrients may be lacking or dietary fiber may interfere with nutrient assimilation. Calories are stored instead of burning them, to ward off possible starvation, when this fuel is lacking. A properly balanced, quality diet that is fed in controlled (not reduced) caloric quantity and provides easy to assimilate nutrients will naturally bring your pet to the proper weight.

Senior foods, puppy foods, etc… Another gimmick to watch out for is formulas that address one life stage over another. This is only the repackaging of the very similar formulas with the plan to have the average household purchase more than one bag at a time, since most families have pets of varying ages. In fact, each life-stage requires the same ingredients, only different calorie requirements and protein levels.  This can be accomplished with the same formula while varying the amount fed on a daily basis.
